Using AI Responsibly

Using AI responsibly means developing and using AI systems to benefit society while minimizing the risk of negative consequences. This includes ensuring that AI systems are fair, reliable, safe, secure, and transparent.

Guidance

When using AI tools, you may not use them:

  • for intentional disinformation or deception; 
  • to violate the privacy rights of others, including unlawful tracking, monitoring, and identification; 
  • to depict a person’s voice or likeness without their consent or other appropriate rights, including unauthorized impersonation and non-consensual sexual imagery; 
  • for harm or abuse of a minor, including grooming and child sexual exploitation;
  • to harass, harm, or encourage the harm of individuals or specific groups; 
  • to intentionally circumvent safety filters and functionality or prompt models to act in a manner that violates The University of Texas at Austin Policies;
  • to perform a lethal function in a weapon without human authorization or control.

Privacy and Security

The University of Texas at Austin is working with our vendors to ensure that any use of AI services with data from the University is private, protected, and secure. Follow these existing policies and guidelines listed below.

Request a Vendor Risk Assessment

AI products must have an active university contract in place and have a vendor security assessment completed by the Information Security Office (ISO) before it can be used with any non-public University data. If you are contemplating using a private generative AI tool or aren’t sure if your use case is covered, contact the ISO.
